Lauki Chana Dal | Chana Dal With Lauki



Serves 5

Ingredients

  • 1 cup chana dal or yellow split peas

  • 1/2 cup lauki, washed, peeled and cut in cubes

  • 1 tsp turmeric/haldi powder

  • 2.5 tsp salt, adjust to taste

  • 3.5 cups water

  • 1/4 tsp hing or asafoetida

For Tempering/Tadka

  • 2 tbsp ghee

  • 1 tsp cumin seeds

  • 1 green chilli, finely chopped

  • 1 tsp ginger garlic paste

  • 1 tsp red chilli powder

Instructions

  1. To a pressure cooker add chana dal and lauki along with turmeric, salt, hing and water.

  2. Pressure cook for 6 whistles on high heat then lower the heat and let it cook for 3 to 4 minutes. Let the pressure release naturally. Then set it aside.

  3. In a pan, heat ghee on medium heat. Once hot, add the cumin seeds. Saute for few seconds until fragrant.

  4. Add the green chillies and garlic-ginger paste. Cook for 1 to 2 minutes.

  5. Then add the red chilli powder. Turn off the gas.

  6. Open the pressure cooker and mix the dal. Let the dal simmer for 3 to 4 minutes.

  7. Pour the tadka over the dal and mix well.

  8. Garnish it with cilantro and serve.
