Moong Dal Khichdi | One Pot Meal

Serves 6

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup moong dal chilka

  • 1/2 cup rice, uncooked

  • 7 cups water

  • 3.5 tsp salt

  • 1 tsp turmeric powder

  • pinch of hing

For the tadka

  • 1 tsp cumin seeds

  • 1 onion, finely chopped

  • 2 tbsp ghee or clarified butter

  • 1 tsp ginger-chilli paste

  • 1 tsp red chilli powder

  • 1 tsp garam masala, garnish

Instructions

  1. Take 1/2 cup moong dal chilka and 1/2 cup uncooked rice and wash them thoroughly.

  2. Now add them to a pressure cooker and add 7 cups water to it alongwith salt, turmeric powder and hing.

  3. Let it soak for 1-2 hours.

  4. After soaking, put on the flame and pressure cook it for 2 whistles.

  5. Now for the tadka, in a pan take 2 tbsp ghee and add cumin seeds and allow them to crackle.

  6. Add ginger-chilli paste and let it cook for a few seconds. Then add onions and cook till they turn translucent.

  7. Add chilli powder and pour the tadka over the prepared khichdi.

  8. Transfer to a serving bowl and sprinkle some garam masala on top.
